Best Wedding Day Hair Style and How to Find it!

As a wedding day makeup artist and hair stylist, I help brides choose the best wedding day hair style.

There is a lot that goes into the decision about the wedding day hair style, as well as how to get your hair into the healthiest, most tip top shape in the weeks leading up to the wedding.

This article covers hair, but if you are interested in how to find the best wedding day makeup artist and hairstylist, see my post.

How to choose the best wedding day hair style

  1. What is the theme of your wedding? Boho, elegant, vintage? What is your dress like? High neck, strapless, tea length? Is it an evening wedding, daytime, indoor, outdoor?  All of these factors will help you figure out a great hairstyle….
  2. Look around for great inspiration… Do lots of online research, wedding websites like the Knot, and even asking your wedding day hairstylist for her input is very effective in getting the style that will look best.
  3. The length of your hair will determine the style, but you can seriously consider extensions for a more voluminous, glamorous wedding day look.
  4. Think About Your Headpiece. Are you wearing a veil? A Hair flower? Fascinator? All of this will influence how you will be wearing your hair
  5. Consider the time of day. Is it an evening wedding? Daytime? Outdoor? Consider the weather as well. If it’s damp or windy you might want to think about an updo with plenty of hairspray.

Should you wear your hair up or down for your wedding?

This depends on the style of your gown! Is it low cut? Strapless? Sweetheart?

If you are showing a lot of skin around the neck, chest, and shoulders, then hair down, or half up, half down makes a lot of sense.

If your neckline is higher, or you have more lace or ornamentation around the neckline or in the back that you want to show off, then hair up makes the most sense.

Is it an evening wedding? Casual? Boho? All of these factors will determine the most appropriate hairstyle.

How soon before my wedding should I get my hair colored?

I recommend coming in at least 2 weeks before your wedding for a good color, and if there are any surprises you have a chance to have it wash out, or to redo it.

The color will settle a bit, and mellow into the natural looking color you want to have for your big day.

Create some strong, healthy hair in the weeks leading up to your wedding, with this genius bond strengthener that the pros swear by:

What should I do to my hair before my wedding?

It will be very helpful to have a great cut for your wedding, but be sure to do it no later than 3 to 4 weeks before your wedding.

Give your hair a chance to “grow into” the new cut, and look a bit more filled out and natural.

It will need time to adjust to the new cut.  You can certainly get a small trim about a week before the wedding if necessary, to just freshen the ends.

Be sure to start deep conditioning your hair at least 2 to 3 months before the wedding, to make sure it’s at its thickest, healthiest and most shiny.

Do some great hair masks to create strong, shiny, healthy hair!

How should I wear my hair style for wedding dress shopping?

It depends on what type of dress you know you are going to choose. If it’s off the shoulders, strapless, or sweetheart you can pin your hair half up half down.

If you are getting a higher neckline with more detail at the top, make sure to pin up your hair to get the right effect.

Should I get hair extensions for my wedding?

I do recommend clip-in extensions for the wedding day. Why clip in? Because the the more permanent type of bonded in hair extensions are a real commitment, and can be damaging to the hair in the long run!

You can have red carpet hair on your big day with some clip-in extensions. Get the best human hair extensions you can find, as they will hold curl more evenly and blend better with your own hair.

Let’s face it, our hair is our most crowing feature. Gorgeously flowing locks, or a voluminous, luxurious updo is going to be the focal point of your wedding day look.

Should you wash your hair the day of your wedding?

I know it’s controversial, and a lot of stylists tell you that dirty hair works best.

I think people take this too literally and wait too long to wash their hair before getting it styled.

Hair that is 2 days or more unwashed has too much oil in it to hold the style well!

Ss a wedding day hair stylist, I recommend washing it the day or night before.

How can I make my wedding hair last all day?

  1. Lots of Hairspray: This one is a no brainer! It really helps.
  2. Add Volume: The more volume the better. Use a texturized and tease if appropriate. The hair will definitely die down, so start with EXTRA volume and fullness.
  3. Begin with tighter, higher curls: THEY WILL COME DOWN, so start with more curling iron
  4. Wait until the very last moment to add your hair accessories and veil: Obviously this will pull the hair down and muss it a bit, so wait until absolutely necessary.
  5. Semi clean hair is best: Do not come in with hair that is more than one day unwashed. Dirty hair has more oils in it and won’t hold the style as well.

Will you be wearing a veil? This will help determine your hairstyle.

What is the point of a veil?

Originally a veil was a religious symbol, as a bride would have to cover her head inside a house of worship. It also symbolized chastity and obedience.

Today it is just a lovely tradition, and has come to symbolize the iconic look of the bride.

Do you have to wear a wedding veil over your face?

Today, the wedding veil is used as more of a simple accessory than a means of warding off evil spirits.

Some brides choose to wear one over their face, but more often than not it’s draped over the back of their hair and dress.

What should I wear instead of a veil?

Nowadays there are so many options for a bride to wear instead of a veil.

  1. A hat
  2. Hair flower or ornament
  3. Fascinator with mini veil. A very vintage look.

Whatever style you choose, just be sure to work it out in advance at your wedding trial, and get photos to show your family and friends for their opinion. You can always get another trial and try something else if the trial style isn’t exactly right.
