Why you should have an updo for your wedding!
As a wedding makeup artist and hair stylist I have done many a bridal hairstyle. I am always asked to weigh in on the best bridal hairstyles for my clients. There are many factors to consider when choosing your wedding day hairstyle: theme and style of wedding, your dress style, location, and time of day.
At one time a bridal updo was stiff and formal and not very youthful or contemporary.
This is no longer true!
Bridal updos have come a long way! They can be informal and “messy”, or vintage and classic, or just traditional and elegant.
Any updo style you choose is going to be very very flattering to your face: it is a “lift” for the face, making the eyes appear wider and the cheekbones higher.

I think you should consider a classic, timeless updo for your wedding!
There are several reasons to consider doing an updo:
1. It WILL stay in longer.
From the walk down the aisle to the last dance, your hair will need to stay elegant and beautiful. No matter how well your hair holds curl, it won’t likely make it through the many hours of a wedding.
Not so with an updo. It is pinned in place and will hold on till the blissful end!
2. There are SOOO many updo styles to choose from.
- Vintage gatsby, 40s victory roll or front curls,
- Informal messy “low bun”
- Very classic updo
- Braided styles
3. IT IS CLASSIC AND ELEGANT! Updos are not just for your mother and grandmother anymore.
NOTHING says bride like an updo.
Now, if you are just a hair down kind of person and just won’t ever consider an updo, that’s understandable, but if you are on the fence, have a look here.
There is a version of an updo for every kind of bride.
From casual and messy, to polished and elegant.
Sure you can wear it down, but I think the curls will fall out more easily, and you can certainly do a classic half up, half down style as a compromise.
This hairstyle is personally one of my favorites, but this depends on the dress and can end up being a little too casual looking for all dress styles.

Is it better to wear your hair up or down for your wedding?
IF you are the kind of girl who always wears your hair down and can’t possibly imagine feeling comfortable or most like yourself with it up, then by all means you should wear it down, or at the most, half up half down.
If you are comfortable wearing it up, or are more adventurous about getting our of your comfort zone for your wedding day, then an updo could be right for you.
Can I do my own wedding hair?
It’s not advisable! Even if you are a hairstylist, I think your wedding day is the best day to relax and feel pampered.
This is the one day to delegate the details to other people, and let yourself have a self-care day. There is nothing like letting a professional doll you up with all the expertise they have at their command.
AND you can’t see in the back, so this isn’t a good idea in general.
Should I wash my hair on my wedding day?
I do think brides are cutting it too close if they wait until that morning to wash their hair. It is unlikely that they will get it 100% dry in time for me to style it with hot tools.
That is not an unexpected drama that anyone needs on the wedding day, when things are supposed to come off without a hitch. And it is one of those things that you DO have control over.
I have done thousands of heads of hair and, contrary to popular belief, dirty hair DOES NOT hold the curl better!!!! The oils weigh it down and it will actually have less holding power.
I always advise the bride and bridal party to wash the day before, and that is plenty. Any earlier than that and the hair will be too dirty and laden with oils.
What wedding dress styles look best with an updo?
Nowadays, with all the updo styles available, I think an updo looks great with just about any dress style,
But it’s a slam dunk with necklines with strappy details and lots of embellishment at the top of the gown.
Also Dramatic low or open back dresses look gorgeous with an updo. This puts the dress center stage, and the hairstyle creates the drama.
